Workmate 79-001 and 79-004 Type Identification Flowchart
The illustrated eleven-question flowchart below will determine what the Type designation (E, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9) is for any particular Workmate Model 79-001. It will also identify the closely related Workmate 79-004. After answering as few as two questions, you will reach a Type identification and a link that will take you to the page where you can learn more about that specific Type and how it differs from others.
Note that this applies only to the 79-001 and 79-004 models, the first Workmates sold in the U.S. The 79-001 included 10 different "Type" designations, sold from 1974 to 1982. The 79-004 was sold only as a Type 1. The flowchart below will not work for later models, nor for any models not sold in the U.S. And, of course, it may not be accurate if a Workmate has been repainted or has replacement jaws or feet. Even in such cases the flowchart should narrow down the possibilities for you. Then you can compare your Workmate with the photos and descriptions on the page for that individual Type to confirm the identification.
INSTRUCTIONS: Always start with the first question, following along in the order directed and stopping when you reach a Type identification. You will only have to answer a few of the questions before you have your result. Click on the resulting Type number to go to the web page that tells all about that Type. On that page you can see the changes in components for that Type and the dates they occurred, to help you date your Workmate.
